The most populous country in Central America, an estimated 75% of Guatemala’s mostly rural 15m inhabitants live below the national poverty line, according to the World Bank. While overall access has increased in urban and rural areas over the past three decades, as recently as 2002, 25% of its people still did not have access to clean water and 75% do not have access to sanitation. A tropical country prone to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and hurricanes, nearly all of its major diseases are water-related.
