Baja Puru, Cemaco, Panama

The Solea Water field team, led by Engineer and Panama Country Director Alan Foster, visited the community of Baja Puru in September of 2021. Baja Puru is an indigenous Embera community of approximately 126 people residing in 31 households, located on the Chucunaque River. The community has water infrastructure from a previous project, but this system is not currently working. The community at this moment does not have clean water access. They currently obtain water by walking to and from the nearby river (or old water source from the previous water project) to fill up buckets or other containers with water. This presents a great opportunity for Rotary and Solea Water to get the water system back online without having to start from zero.

Baja Puru is located in the Embera-Wounaan Comarca in the Eastern Panama province of Darien. View our project map to locate the community!

Project Details

Phase 1

During our initial visit to Baja Puru, we surveyed the community looking for any existing infrastructure we could use for the water project. The community has two water tanks located on the school property that could expand the capacity of our proposed water system.

Solea Water will move forward with redesigning and constructing Baja Puru’s water system. Please visit our donations page to donate to Baja Puru and other Solea projects!

PHASE 2

In November 2022, Solea’s team began the construction of the new distribution system in Baja Puru. The community will remain in Phase 2 until the construction is complete and water testing begin.
