Boca del Tigre, Cemaco, Panama

Boca de Tigre is located in the Embera-Wounaan Comarca in the Eastern Panama province of Darien. It is an indigenous Embera community of approximately 150 people residing in 60 households on the Chico River. The community has water infrastructure from a previous project completed in 1996, but this system is not currently working. The community at this moment does not have clean water access. They currently obtain water by walking to and from the nearby river to fill buckets or other containers with water.

One large water tank in the middle of the community will add capacity to and reduce the cost of our proposed water system. We will be digging a gallery-infiltration well along the historic riverbank of the community. This method has proven successful in numerous projects conducted by Solea Water, including a previous Global Grant completed in 2021. During an open meeting with the Boca de Tigre community, many residents and the community leaders expressed that access to clean water was currently one of the highest priority needs for their community. They are eager for us to work with them, and it was agreed in writing that the community would contribute the necessary labor for implementation free of charge and a monetary portion of the project cost.

Existing Infrastructure

During our initial visit to Boca de Tigre, we surveyed the community looking for any existing infrastructure that we could possibly use for the water project. The community has a water tank in fair condition that we can refurbish to use for our proposed water system. There are also a number of pipes from a previous water project that remain in fair condition. Our team evaluated these pipes and determined they can be used as part of our proposed project.
