Canaan, Cemaco, Panama

Solea Water designed and constructed a municipal water system for the community based on its existing resources. A hand-dug well was reconstructed near the river, and solar panels were used to pump the water to a storage tank that supplies individual tap stands at each home and a few other community buildings. Solea Water provides ongoing WASH education when appropriate. WASH training will utilizes local teachers, clinic workers, and health promoters when possible to avoid any cross-cultural education issues that may arise and increase capacity through a “train the trainer” model of education.

Solea Water has built a long-term partnership with Canaan. Most recently, our team completed a new project in the community. With the funding support of the Red Cross and labour from the community, our team built 10 new latrines for Canaan.

FIELD NOTES

Summer 2016:

The community of Canaan had a number of partial and sanitation infrastructures that did not fit together properly. The community has a Water Committee that charges each family $1/month for water to maintain the system. Working here, we partnered closely with this Water Committee to ensure our project will be the right fit for the community and be implemented sustainably. The community contributed labor to build the project and a commitment to continue systems in the future.

The municipal water system consisted of a hand dug well near the river and solar panels that pump clean water to.a storage tank which supplies individual tap stands at homes and a few other community buildings with water. Our work in Canaan started with improving what was already in the community. The existing well and pump were unstable, however the tank, well casing and distribution lines were reworked and used in our water system.

Solea Water also provided WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) education to the community in conjunction with the completion of the water infrastructure. The WASH training utilized local teachers, clinic workers, and health promoters when possible to avoid any cross-cultural education issues that may arise, as well as to increase capacity through a “train the trainer” model of education.
